At our seventh summer meeting we watched Battle Royale.

Overview:  “Battle Royale is set in a dystopian future Japan in which a group of middle school students are chosen to participate in a death game after the government has passed an act to deal with overpopulation and unmotivated students. A randomly-selected class of ninth-grade students are taken unwillingly to a small isolated island. Each student is given a map, bread and water, and a randomly allocated weapon. Some students get "weapons" such as binoculars and frying pans, but others get swords, guns and grenades. The students are forced to kill each other until only one survivor remains. Each student is forced to wear a special collar which will explode when they break a rule. Friends and lovers are forced to set their emotions aside as the bloody battle ensues.”

At our sixth summer meeting we watched The Machine Girl.

Overview:  “Ami is a tough but otherwise average high school girl trying to lead a normal life. Her world comes crashing down when her brother and his friend are killed by ruthless bullies. As Ami tracks down the ringleader she is surprised to discover the bullies' association with a sinister ninja yakuza family. When she goes after her revenge she soon finds herself in over her head and minus her left arm. Barely surviving Ami escapes and seeks out shelter from two kindly garage mechanics. They take pity on her fitting her with a high-powered machine gun where her arm used to be. She then teams up with the chainsaw-wielding mother of her brother's slain friend and together they unleash an unholy non-stop over-the-top kill fest against the equally creative machinery of their relentless ninja enemies.”

A brilliant student, he dropped out of Tokyo University's law program because he had had mastered the entire curriculum. Now he lives a simple life, traveling on his bicycle and working numerous part-time jobs ranging from software companies to noodle restaurants in order to learn everything that he can about the world. Although he's a kind and giving person, Kintaro's only weakness lies in his lust for beautiful women. However, as long as he can control himself, he may just manage to save the day, and win a few hearts in the process.”

When a cryptic phone call tips off police to a strange website that appears to be tracking the suicides before they happen the question becomes are they really suicides at all?”

At our third summer meeting we watched Samurai Champloo.

Overview:  “Mugen's a completely wild, uncontrollable warrior - deadly with his blend of capoeira-style swordsmanship and short temper. Jin is the epitome of the stoic samurai, lightning-quick, cool and always in control. And Fuu? She's an adorable (and somewhat airheaded) girl who manages to rein these two in to help her search for a mysterious "samurai who smells of sunflowers." Hopefully, she can keep them from killing each other and stay out of trouble along the way...”
